Cantor Ralph Nussbaum came to ENJC in 1994 and brought with him a unique ability to become a vital and integral part of the East Northport community and the surrounding area.
Trained in South Africa and Israel, he specialized in operatic, cantorial and Talmudic studies. At age 23 he began his professional career as one of the youngest Chazzanim in South Africa. After a highly successful tenure at Temple Beth El in Cranford, NJ, he joined the clergy team at ENJC, frequently surprising the congregation with his use of Israeli, Operatic, Broadway and even children's songs and melodies in Shabbat and holiday prayer services. While surprises are his passion, he consistently maintains the highest levels of cantorial excellence as he leads the congregation in prayer.
His Bar and Bat Mitzvah students shine on the bima; his creation of a "Post Bar and Bat Mitzvah Club" has resulted in a regular flow of teens who return after their celebrations to participate in Shabbat Morning Services. His initiation, some 21 years ago, of The ENJC Adult Choir, gives the congregation and other synagogues and the community at large, the opportunity to enjoy choral masterpieces in four-part harmony.
Cantor Nussbaum leads the re-instituted Chesed Committee, which serves the congregational community by delivering Shabbat meals to families in mourning or going through challenging health issues, driving congregants to doctor's appointments, and generally supporting those in need in the ENJC community.
Fifteen years ago, our Cantor became Principal and Educational director of the ENJC Religious school. His tenure there has resulted in an energized and invigorated school recognized by the community for its excellence and earning numerous achievement awards.
